What the research is remembering
– A 2023 review of hydrogen therapy identified dozens of clinical trials and human publications across cardiovascular, respiratory, neurologic, infectious, and oncologic settings, with inhalation as the most common route. The literature is expanding rather than settled.
– A single 45-minute inhalation of hydrogen gas reduced airway inflammatory markers in people with asthma and COPD, including MCP-1 and selected interleukins measured in exhaled breath condensate.
– A large real-world observational study in hypertensive adults in China associated adjunct hydrogen inhalation with meaningful reductions in systolic and diastolic pressure over 24 weeks and higher rates of blood-pressure control, with a safety profile similar to usual care. This is supportive, not a replacement for medical treatment of hypertension.
– Four weeks of hydrogen inhalation in community-dwelling adults was associated with lower oxidative- stress markers and favorable shifts in several cognition-related biomarkers, with good tolerability.
– Hydrogen-oxygen mixtures have been studied in acute COPD exacerbations and in COVID-era respiratory care for symptom relief and inflammatory markers. Meta-analytic work in animal lung models supports anti-inflammatory and antioxidant effects of higher-concentration hydrogen.
