Vitamin D Lights

A people who live indoors have not only forgotten the sun. They have forgotten a hormone the skin was built to make.
Vitamin D is not a vitamin in the grocery-aisle sense. It is a steroid hormone whose first draft is written
when UVB light meets 7-dehydrocholesterol in the skin. Northern winters, glass windows, sunscreen, night-shift work, and a life lived under LEDs have made that draft rare.
Our vitamin D lights are a measured return of the wavelength the skin recognizes — not a tanning bed, not a vacation in a bulb, but a brief, intelligent noon for people who cannot live outside at solar noon.
What you may notice
• A lift in winter mood and daytime energy as the hormone of sunlight returns to range.
• Support for bone, immune tone, and the quiet sense that the season inside the body matches the season outside.
• A kinder alternative for those who cannot get adequate mid-day sun, or whose absorption of oral vitamin D has been unreliable.
• The feeling of having been outdoors without the burn or the schedule.
What the research is remembering
– Narrowband UVB LEDs near 293–297 nm convert 7-dehydrocholesterol to previtamin D₃ more efficiently than full-spectrum sunlight in controlled skin studies — in one comparison, a 293 nm LED produced more vitamin D₃ in a fraction of the sun’s time.
– Long-term 297 nm LED exposure in osteoporotic animal models raised vitamin D and improved bone measures without observed skin injury across months of use.
– Narrowband UVB phototherapy, long used in psoriasis and eczema, raises serum 25-hydroxyvitamin D and has been associated with reductions in systemic inflammatory markers and disease scores. People who begin deficient often respond more clearly.
– A large Swedish cohort following women for two decades found that avoiding sun exposure was associated with a life expectancy similar to smoking — a stark reminder that light is not optional biology.
– Randomized work on dedicated UVB wellness systems continues to test how reliably they raise 25- hydroxyvitamin D in people who live far from the equator.
We dose light the way we dose anything that matters: briefly, with respect for skin type, medications that increase photosensitivity, and the difference between a hormone and a tan. If you have a history of skin cancer or take photosensitizing drugs, we talk first.
A remembering
You were designed to stand in a field at noon. Most of us no longer can. Come borrow a precise sliver of tthat noon, then go home and open a window.
